Filipiniana tops: one piece, many outfits

Filipiniana tops are the practical way to wear Filipino dress. A blouse, kimona, bolero, alampay or pañuelo goes over clothes you already own, so one purchase covers a church wedding, an office party and a school programme instead of one outfit for each.

Five kinds of top sit in this collection and they do different jobs. Below is what each is for, which fabric suits which event, and how to size correctly when you are ordering from abroad.

The five types

Type What it is Covers arms
Blouse The baro, top half of the traditional two-piece. Sheer, butterfly or puff sleeves Yes
Kimona A light Visayan blouse, originally everyday working dress Yes
Bolero A cropped open jacket worn over a dress or top Yes
Alampay A soft sheer shawl, folded and pinned at the chest No
Pañuelo The stiffer, structured version of the alampay No

This matters more than it looks. If a dress code asks for covered shoulders, only the first three do it. A shawl covers the shoulder line and leaves the upper arm bare.

Choosing Filipiniana tops by occasion

Church wedding

A bolero over a sleeveless dress. It covers the shoulders for the ceremony and comes off at the reception, so one outfit works at two levels of formality.

Office and corporate events

A blouse with tailored trousers reads as smart workwear rather than costume. Pick a scattered embroidery pattern over a dense one.

Graduations and school programmes

A kimona. It was built for warm days and long hours in the Visayas, which is exactly what a ceremony asks of it.

Over a dress you already own

An alampay or pañuelo. The smallest thing you can buy that still reads clearly as Filipiniana.

Choosing the fabric

Fabric How it feels Best for
Organza Crisp and sheer, holds a butterfly sleeve Weddings and formal receptions
Piña organza Finer, very sheer, the most traditional Formal and cultural events
Jusilyn Soft, light, easy to wash Daytime events and repeat wear
Cloud organdy Light with a soft matte surface Warm-weather events
Cocoon Textured and matte, with a natural slub Pieces where the weave is the feature
Lace Soft, open pattern, drapes rather than standing Evening events

Sheer cloth is designed with a layer underneath. A camisole close to your skin tone disappears better than white, which photographs as a separate layer.

Fit and sizing

These are cut to measurements rather than to a high-street number, so a 10 in London or an 8 in Sydney does not translate. Take three measurements before ordering: bust, waist and shoulder width.

Shoulder width is the one people skip and the one that decides the fit. The sleeve is set into the shoulder at a fixed angle. If that measurement is wrong, the butterfly shape will not lift however well the rest fits. A tailor can take in a waist. Resetting a sleeve is a different job.

Measurements for every style are on the size chart, and made-to-measure is available on request.

Completing the outfit

  • Below the waist. A plain long skirt for formal events, tailored trousers for the office, dark plain jeans with a kimona for casual.
  • One worked piece only. If the top is heavily embroidered, keep the skirt and any second layer plain.
  • Jewellery. Pearl or gold, scaled to the neckline. See the earrings and Filipiniana accessories, including brooches for pinning a shawl.
  • Matching a partner. A cream or beige barong sits well beside most of these without being an exact match.
  • Prefer one piece to two? See the Filipiniana dresses or the modern Filipiniana range.

Care

  • Hand wash in cool water, or dry clean anything heavily embroidered.
  • Never wring a sleeve. Press the water out between towels.
  • Dry flat and out of direct sun, which fades dyed thread faster than washing does.
  • Store on a padded hanger. Wire hangers dent organza at the shoulder.
  • Press on low with a cloth between the iron and any stitching.

Shipping

Every piece here is made in the Philippines and shipped with tracking, with standard or express chosen at checkout. In-stock sizes leave sooner than made-to-order ones, and customs can add time, so order ahead of the month of your event. Full details are on the shipping and delivery page.

Common questions

Which Filipiniana top should I buy first?

A blouse or kimona in a neutral shade. It changes character depending on what you pair it with, so it covers more events than anything else here.

What do I wear under a sheer top?

A camisole or slip in a colour close to your skin. Most sheer pieces are designed with that layer in mind.

Will a regular bra strap show?

Often yes. Butterfly sleeves attach wide on the shoulder, so a strapless or convertible bra is the usual fix.

Can a bolero go over a dress I already own?

Yes, and that is the most common use. A cropped jacket over a plain dress turns it into cultural dress in one layer.

Are these suitable for a non-Filipino event?

A blouse or bolero reads as well-made formal wear to anyone and needs no explaining.

Can I order a custom size?

Yes. Send your measurements through the contact page and we will confirm what is possible for the style you want.
